Frequently Asked Questions
Nebraska Unique Identification Number (NUID)/Password
For security purposes, all applicants receive an NUID (Nebraska Unique Identification Number) and a temporary password during the application process. A personal MavLINK password must be created upon initial login. The NUID is an eight-digit number unique to the University of Nebraska system and can be used across all campuses.
Use of Social Security Number
A Social Security number is requested on the admissions application only for credential verification, document matching, and determination of financial aid and scholarship eligibility. Applicants without a Social Security number may apply for admission but are not eligible for federal financial aid.
Health Requirement Information
Applicants born on or after January 1, 1957, must provide official proof of receiving two MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccinations before registering for courses. Domestic applicants who graduated from a U.S. high school are exempt. For further information, contact Undergraduate Admissions at 402.554.2393.
Residency for Tuition Purposes
Residency Classification
To qualify for resident tuition rates, an individual must establish 12 consecutive months of residency in Nebraska unless an exception is outlined in the residency application form. Individuals who move to Nebraska primarily to attend college are classified as nonresidents for tuition purposes.
Enrollment in more than half-time coursework at a Nebraska post-secondary institution during the 12 months prior to applying for residency serves as strong evidence that the relocation was for educational purposes. As a result, the individual will remain classified as a nonresident.
Applicants classified as nonresidents who believe they qualify for residency should review the Application for Residence Classification for Tuition Purposes. Residency changes are not retroactive and apply only to the term in which approval is granted.
Resident Tuition for Certain Non-U.S. Citizens
Under Nebraska state law, certain applicants who do not hold U.S. citizenship or legal residency may qualify for resident tuition if all of the following criteria are met:
- Graduation from a Nebraska high school or receipt of an equivalent diploma in Nebraska.
- Continuous residence in Nebraska for at least three years before high school graduation while living with a parent, guardian, or conservator.
- Submission of an affidavit stating intent to apply for U.S. Permanent Residency at the earliest opportunity.
Omaha Urban Rate (OUR) Tuition
The Omaha Urban Rate (OUR) Tuition program provides significantly reduced tuition rates to eligible high school graduates and current residents from the following states:
Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Wyoming.
For full eligibility details and application procedures, visit the UNO OUR Tuition website.
Nebraska State Income Tax Credit
Applicants who do not qualify for resident tuition rates but pay Nebraska state income tax may be eligible for a tuition credit. This credit extends to spouses and dependents of Nebraska taxpayers who meet eligibility requirements.
The tuition credit is based on the amount of Nebraska state income tax paid in the prior calendar year. However, tuition cannot be reduced below the resident rate.
Applications for the Non-Resident Nebraska Income Tax Tuition Credit are available at the UNO Cashiering and Student Accounts Office (109 Eppley Administration Building) and can also be downloaded from the UNO website. For questions, contact 402.554.2324.
Veteran's Promise
Under the Nebraska Veteran Promise Act, eligible military service members and veterans who meet UNO’s general admission requirements are guaranteed admission to undergraduate programs, whether attending in person or online.
This policy aligns with the University of Nebraska Board of Regents (BOR) guidelines to ensure that Nebraska’s military service members and veterans have access to higher education.
Applicants Who Apply for Admission and Do Not Enroll
Applicants who submit an application but do not enroll must notify the UNO Office of Undergraduate Admissions via email at unoadmissions@unomaha.edu. Once notification is received, the application will be withdrawn. To enroll in a future term, a new application is required.
Additional considerations for non-enrolled applicants:
- Transcripts submitted for admission will be retained for one year. After that period, new transcripts must be provided for admission consideration.
- Applicants awarded financial aid from a non-UNO source must notify the Office of Financial Support and Scholarships to avoid cancellation or adjustment of UNO financial aid.
For all questions regarding application status, residency classification, tuition rates, or financial aid eligibility, contact the UNO Office of Undergraduate Admissions for assistance.
