ART 3200 LETTERPRESS 1 (3 credits)
Using moveable metal and wood type and other relief surfaces, students will design and print several letterpress-based projects on a Vandercook Proof press. In addition to learning the techniques of letterpress printing, students will be introduced to the history of letterpress through assigned readings, presentations, and in-class discussions. Throughout this course, we will combine traditional and experimental printing methods to create projects that exemplify fine printing techniques in order to join in the conversation with contemporary print culture. You will be asked to consider the relationship between form and content, and between text and image on the printed page.
