General Science

The Bachelor of Science in General Science is available with or without a concentration. Without a concentration, the major includes coursework from multiple disciplines—biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, geography, and geology—making it ideal for students who prefer a broad scientific foundation rather than specializing in a single field.

For students planning to apply to UNMC’s Medical Laboratory Science program, the Medical Laboratory Science concentration offers more focused coursework tailored to meeting program prerequisites. This option also allows students to earn a dual degree upon completing their professional program at UNMC.

Degrees Offered

All coursework taken for the General Science major must be completed with a grade of “C-“ or better.

The General Science major provides students with a broad scientific foundation while developing essential mathematics and science skills. Although few students choose this major initially, many transition to it after discovering that their original science major requires a degree of specialization beyond what is necessary or desired for their intended career path.

The General Science major is designed for students preparing for careers in various health professions (such as Pre-Occupational Therapy, Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Nursing, and Pre-Medical Laboratory Science), those planning to pursue graduate studies at the master's or doctoral level, students seeking teacher certification, and individuals preparing for employment in a wide range of science-related fields.

When combined with other complementary, more specific majors or minors, a degree in general science can also be excellent preparation for careers in law, business, public relations, and writing careers in science, technology or natural history.

Career options include, but are not limited to:

  • Healthcare
  • Technical Writing
  •  Research
  • Environmental Science
  • Natural History
  • Business
  • Public Relations
  • Law
  • High School Science Teacher
